On March 28, 2025, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Mandalay, affecting 10 regions and states, including the Union Territory of Nay Pyi Taw. This devastating event resulted in thousands of deaths, numerous people missing, and many injuries, leaving tens of thousands affected.
A field survey of the damage caused by the Mandalay earthquake revealed that the government sector incurred losses exceeding Ks4,779 billion. This included significant damage to infrastructure such as irrigation dams, roads and bridges, educational institutions, health facilities, rail transport, electricity and energy systems, communications, religious affairs, cultural sites, government factories, workshops, and office buildings.
The private sector also suffered heavily, with losses surpassing Ks3,200 billion. This encompassed damage to residential buildings, private factories and workshops, businesses, private schools, hospitals and clinics, as well as agricultural crops. The total estimated loss from the earthquake amounts to over Ks7,979 billion (equivalent to approximately US$3,800 million).
The state is providing assistance to the victims of the earthquake. From the beginning of the earthquake until November 8, 2025, the National Disaster Management Fund has allocated more than 42.094 billion kyats for emergency food supplies to directly benefit those affected. Additionally, over 4.733 billion kyats has been provided to support the families of the deceased, 0.175 billion kyats for the injured, and more than 1,605.571 billion kyats for the reconstruction of houses. This brings the total assistance to more than 1,652.573 billion kyats. Furthermore, more than 340 billion kyats has been spent on initial rehabilitation activities. Timely distributions of food and consumer goods donated by both domestic and foreign sources have also taken place in the affected areas.

Rehabilitation efforts are progressing rapidly under the guidance of the Head of State. All basic education schools have reopened in time for the new school year, and hospitals and clinics are also operational to provide healthcare services. Repairs have been completed for 94.43 percent of damaged roads, 38.83 percent of damaged bridges, and 96.39 percent of damage along the Myanmar Railways. In the communications sector, 97.19 percent of repairs have been finalized, and 98.61 percent of electricity distribution has been restored. Overall, it is reported that rehabilitation works are advancing quickly across all sectors and organizations to ensure the completion of these efforts.
