Former Deputy Minister U Maung Maung Win, who is facing corruption charges, has been sentenced to three years in prison by the Nay Pyi Taw Prison Court, according to sources close to the case.
He was detained in March 2025 after being relieved of his duties on May 27, 2024. He was charged under Section 55 of the Anti-Corruption Law and sentenced by the court on May 30.
“Now, they are taking corruption very seriously. There is a team monitoring ministers. The State Administration Council (SAC) is addressing this issue more rigorously than in the past. Currently, there are cases of money laundering and related bank cases. There may be additional cases emerging. I am sharing this information as I know it. U Maung Maung Win was given responsibilities during both the previous government and the NSA government,” a source close to the SAC community told MT News.
In addition to U Maung Maung Win, Central Bank Director General U Min Han Soe and Planning and Finance Director General U Win Htike, who are also facing charges under Section 56 of the Anti-Corruption Law, were sentenced to three years in prison.
It is reported that U Maung Maung Win, who served as Permanent Secretary and Deputy Minister of Planning and Finance under the previous National League for Democracy (NLD) government in 2016, was later appointed as Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Planning and Finance by the NLD government. He has now been sentenced to prison for corruption.
Local and international media are reporting that the corruption charges against U Maung Maung Win are related to the case of a former managing director of the Myanmar Foreign Trade Bank, who was arrested for embezzlement and receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes.
