28 May 2025
A depression is likely to form in the next 24 hours, according to a statement issued by the Department of Meteorological and Hydrology at 11 am on 28 May.
According to the measurements made at 10:30 am today, Myanmar Standard Time, the low pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal (off the coast of Odisha, India) has strengthened and become a well marked low pressure area. It is forecast to move northward slowly, strengthen further and become a depression in the next 24 hours.
“Cyclogenicity in the next 48 hours is considered high and the ECMWF cyclone activity – including genesis – stated that there is a 100% chance of a depression. The India Meteorological Department forecast it may develop from a well marked LPA to a depression. There is not enough time to intensify because it is very close to the coast,” said meteorologist U Win Naing.
If it reached the cyclone level as well as landfall, it would have been a named one in 2025.
“If it strengthened, rain and wind would be more intense in Myanmar, especially in Rakhine coastal area. I will mainly report on the intensified situation,” he said at around 2 pm on 28 May.
