On May 29 at 10 a.m., U Khin Yi, the Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw, welcomed a delegation led by Ms. Gwyn Lewis, the Head of the United Nations Organizations in Myanmar. The meeting took place at the Pyithu Hluttaw Reception Hall in Nay Pyi Taw.
During the meeting, Ms. Gwyn Lewis, who also serves as the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator, expressed her commitment to collaborating with the Interim Coordinator to address the developmental needs of Myanmar.
In response, Speaker U Khin Yi highlighted that the government is actively investigating and prosecuting online fraud. He emphasized ongoing cooperation with neighboring countries, regional partners, and international organizations. Furthermore, he mentioned that a draft law aimed at combating online fraud has been prepared and will be prioritized for enactment in the upcoming Hluttaw sessions. The Hluttaw is working closely with the government to meet the needs of the people.
The Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw, U Khin Yi, emphasized that our parliamentarians represent the people and convey their concerns and aspirations to the government through the parliament. He stated that they can collaborate on issues such as humanitarian assistance, national development, and rehabilitation.
Following this, the Acting Coordinator, Ms. Gwyn Lewis, mentioned that efforts are underway to ensure that humanitarian assistance is delivered safely and without hindrance to displaced people. She highlighted a commitment to work together to rebuild towns and villages damaged by natural disasters, prevent and combat drug trafficking, promote coffee cultivation as an alternative to opium, and develop markets to enhance education and health in the region.
Ms. Lewis emphasized that the international community recognizes Myanmar’s effective measures against online fraud and drug prevention, and expressed a dedication to strengthening relations with Myanmar. The interim coordinator also stated that there will be cooperation in mine clearance activities to facilitate the return of displaced people to their homes, as well as collaboration on Myanmar’s development needs.
