President U Min Aung Hlaing, currently on a state visit to Laos, met with Lao Prime Minister Son Tsai Ing-wen. During their discussions, they explored ways to strengthen bilateral friendship and strategic cooperation, as well as to enhance collaboration in various sectors, including border trade, electricity, labor, security, and border stability. This information was shared in a statement by the Presidential Spokesperson, Dr. Khine Khine Soe.
In their talks, President U Min Aung Hlaing and Prime Minister Son Tsai Ing-wen agreed to deepen the Myanmar-Laos relationship and strategic cooperation, building on the goodwill established over the past 70 years of diplomatic relations in preparation for the upcoming 75th anniversary. They also focused on accelerating border trade, developing border gates, finalizing cross-border agreements, and speeding up the Myanmar-Laos cross-border power grid project, along with purchasing electricity from Laos.
Furthermore, both parties agreed to collaborate on promoting legal labor dispatch and protecting labor rights, as well as related Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). They will exchange information and work together to combat issues such as online fraud, online gambling, money laundering, and drug trafficking. Regular meetings will be held by the Joint Border Committee (JBC/JBSC) and the Regional Border Committee (RBC) to enhance border security and stability. Additionally, they plan to expand cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), agriculture, tourism, health, education, and language training. They also aim to jointly address cross-border issues such as smoke, forest fires, and environmental concerns in the region.
In addition, the Lao Prime Minister expressed confidence in the success of Myanmar’s peace, development, and reform efforts, hoping that Myanmar would soon be able to rejoin the ASEAN community. The President conveyed gratitude for Laos’ ongoing support and assistance following the Mandalay earthquake and invited the Lao Prime Minister to visit Myanmar for goodwill purposes.
