The Chin Refugee Committee has issued a statement urging Myanmar citizens in India to show their gratitude by refraining from participating in drug trafficking. This call comes in light of the fact that the majority of those arrested in drug seizures in India are of Chin ethnicity.
Since the February 2021 crisis in Myanmar, many Myanmar nationals have sought refuge in various regions of India, including New Delhi, Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland. The Chin Refugee Committee expresses deep gratitude to India for providing asylum to Myanmar nationals, recognizing it as a supportive neighbor, despite India not being a signatory to the Refugee Convention of 1951.
In acknowledgment of the support from Indian civil society organizations, religious groups, political parties, and government authorities helping Myanmar nationals, the Chin Refugee Committee has outlined the following guidelines:
- Myanmar nationals should avoid involvement in any illegal activities, including drug trafficking.
- They should respect and abide by existing laws.
- They must comply with rules and regulations set forth by both the Indian Central and State Governments, as well as civil society organizations.
- They are encouraged to engage positively and harmoniously with local communities.
- They should disseminate this message within their respective communities
