Among the many heritages designated as intangible cultural heritage in Myanmar, Burmese tea will be nominated as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage next year, said Daw Sandar Khin, chairwoman of the Myanmar Cultural Heritage Preservation Committee.
This is Myanmar’s third World Intangible Cultural Heritage nomination. The first nomination was for the Myanmar traditional New Year festival, which was designated as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage on December 5, 2024, and the second is for the Myanmar traditional Thanaka which will be nominated in March this year.
In Myanmar, the Pyu city-states of Sri Kshetra, Hanlin and the ancient city of Bithano were designated as UNESCO sites in 2014. The Bagan region was also designated as a UNESCO site in 2019.
As of March 2024, Myanmar has over 2,000 cultural heritage sites designated as national intangible cultural heritage sites. Of these, only one cultural heritage site can be nominated by relevant civil society organizations per year for inclusion in UNESCO’s list.
