The 2026 (1387 ME) Maha Thingyan Festival will be held nationwide with a focus on walking Thingyan events, while the use of floats and water-splashing vehicles will be avoided, according to a statement released yesterday by the state-run newspaper.
This year’s festival will incorporate traditional Myanmar cultural elements, including performances by traditional dance troupes and cultural groups. Social and religious activities such as food donations, hair washing and nail clipping for the elderly, medicine donations, and fish releases will also be carried out, ensuring that the essence of Myanmar’s traditions is preserved.
In addition, this year’s Thingyan will go beyond a typical festive celebration, aiming to serve as a grand national event that brings together government officials, parliamentarians, civil servants, and the general public. The festival is intended to be celebrated collectively with renewed spirit, new participants, and evolving political themes.
As part of the walking Thingyan initiative, pavilions will be set up across cities, districts, townships, wards, and villages, allowing people to participate conveniently within their local areas. Entertainment programs will feature performances by nationally renowned artists as well as local singers and musicians. #Thingyan #Traditional #Avoid Vehicles #mtnews
