The 2024 census was conducted in line with international standards, despite the challenges involved in gathering accurate statistical data regarding the current situation and future development of the country. This statement was made by the Acting President and Chairman of SSPC, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, during the ceremony to launch the Union Report on the 2024 Population and Housing Census.
The census is a large-scale and comprehensive endeavor, and it also entails significant costs. However, obtaining accurate demographic statistics is crucial for understanding the current situation and planning for the country’s future development. Conducting a census every ten years, as recommended by the United Nations, is essential. Therefore, despite the difficulties and challenges, the Acting President emphasized the importance of moving forward with the census.
The 2024 census data indicates that the country’s population has slightly decreased for the first time in decades. This trend presents both challenges and opportunities, attributed to declining birth rates, increased migration, and changing family structures, according to the acting president.
The acting president emphasized that migration is influenced by the country’s socio-economic conditions, political stability, domestic job availability, and the economic situation in neighboring countries. Therefore, he stressed the need for plans to be established that will guide the country’s long-term development.
Despite the high emigration rate among our country’s youth, there remains a significant number of young people who are able to work due to the high birth rate. Essentially, the demographic bonus is still in effect. Therefore, it is essential to provide these young individuals with opportunities to contribute effectively and efficiently to national development efforts before this demographic bonus period ends, as stated by the acting president.
Looking back at Myanmar’s census history, we see that there were eight censuses conducted between 1872 and 1941 before independence. After gaining independence, national censuses were conducted in 1973, 1983, and 2014. With the upcoming census in 2024, there will have been a total of four censuses conducted since then. #Acting president #Chairman of SSP #2024 census #mtnews
