The strategically important city of Hsipaw was temporarily controlled by the Ta’ang Palaung National Liberation Army (TNLA), which has been designated a terrorist group, in October 2024. However, it has been reported that the Tatmadaw has since regained full control of Hsipaw after eliminating all members of the TNLA.
Hsipaw is located along the Mandalay-Lashio-Muse highway, a major trade route connecting to China, making control of this vital international and regional route crucial for economic and logistical reasons. The TNLA, along with the Danu National Progressive Party (DPLA), MDY PDF, and other People’s Defense Forces, fought fiercely to prevent Hsibaw from falling back into Tatmadaw hands. Despite their efforts, they were unable to withstand the offensive from the Tatmadaw and ultimately fled the city, suffering heavy casualties in the process.
When the Tatmadaw columns attempted to take control of Kyaukme town, the TNLA insurgents set fire to numerous departmental buildings and public houses before fleeing. A similar pattern unfolded yesterday in Hsipaw town, where, as the Tatmadaw began its offensive, the TNLA terrorists again burned down many departmental buildings and public houses before escaping.
This morning, the Tatmadaw announced that its forces had successfully cleared the TNLA terrorists from Hsipaw town, and the local residents welcomed them enthusiastically.
