The All Burma Students’ Union Federation (ABSDF) has expelled two of its members, Myo Maung Maung and Myo Nyi Nyi, for their involvement in an attempted rape of a female student.
The incident occurred on the night of June 2025 and was reported on July 4th. According to reports, the two members arrived at the female student’s residence late at night. Despite her repeated refusals, they persistently demanded and attempted to engage in sexual intercourse, using both coercive and forceful means.
The two perpetrators admitted that they went to the female comrade’s residence with the intention of seeking sexual relations; however, they repeatedly denied committing the crime. The ABSDF stated that their attempts to engage in sexual intercourse, despite the female comrade’s discomfort and refusal, were clearly unacceptable.
The ABSDF strongly condemns all forms of sexual harassment and believes that creating a physically and psychologically safe environment for female comrades is essential for the successful liberation of women. As a result, Myo Maung Maung and Myo Nyi Nyi have been stripped of all responsibilities assigned to them by the ABSDF and have been formally expelled from their membership in the ABSDF.
Attempted rape is a serious crime, often considered one of the most heinous offenses. In a law-abiding society, such crimes can lead to a prison sentence of five to ten years. However, in situations where law and order break down—such as when armed forces are operating in the jungle—the ABSDF has only dismissed these two individuals for attempted rape. During this period, there have been numerous reports of rape and sexual assault targeting women in the People’s Defense Force (PDF) who are hiding in the jungle.
