The Bago Region government has announced plans to renovate the ancient and historic Thonpanhla Monastery, which was classified as “red” following the Mandalay earthquake, to ensure its original appearance is preserved.
In order to preserve the original architecture of the ancient two-storey monastery, iron pillars will be installed to reinforce the doors and windows.
According to historians, the Thonpanhla Monastery in Pyay Township, Bago Region, is lieved to be around centuries-old and is renowned as the residence of the great poet Shin Maha Ratthasara, a monk during the Inwa era.
The monastery is also known for Latheesaekkan, a lake within its grounds, which oral history suggests is the site of the tomb of the renowned Princess Thonpanhla from the Pyu era.
The restoration is seen as a vital step in preserving Myanmar’s cultural heritage, ensuring that future generations can continue to draw inspiration from one of Pyay’s most revered religious landmarks.
