According to Daw Thin Thin Yu, the sanctuary’s warden, over 29,000 birds from 132 species arrived at the Moeyungyi Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary in Bago Region between October 2024 and January 2025.
Nine different migration routes take birds from the North Pole to their wintering grounds in southern regions. Between late October and March, wintering birds from the Asia-Australian, Middle Asian, and West Asia-East Africa flyways arrive in Myanmar. Some years, they don’t return to breeding grounds until April.
There are many wintering birds at The 25,600-acre Moeyungyi Lake this year, including common grebes, blue wagtails, common coots, red-wattled lapwings, grey herons, wild ducks, Pacific golden plovers, purple swamphens, red jays, river terns, whistling ducks, and common curlews.
