Myanmar unconditionally rejected the resolution proposal submitted by Belgium on behalf of the European Union

9 April 2024

The State Administration Council (SAC) announced that the resolution proposed by Belgium on behalf of the European Union has been totally rejected, and that one-sided pressure on Myanmar will not contribute to constructive cooperation yesterday.

The Human Rights Council held the 55th regular session from 26 February to 5 April 2024 in Geneva. During the meeting, the Interactive Dialogues with the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar were held on 1 and 19 March 2024, respectively. The Human Rights Council also adopted the resolution entitled “Situation of Human Rights in Myanmar” submitted by Belgium on behalf of the EU on 4 April 2024 in the absence of Myanmar (the country concerned).

In addition, the United Nations Human Rights Council on April 4 approved the resolution proposed by Belgium on behalf of the European Union, entitled “Situation of Human Rights in Myanmar”, without the participation of the concerned Myanmar. The resolution was found to contain baseless one-sided allegations about Myanmar’s human rights and humanitarian issues.

Myanmar is keeping up its efforts for the repatriation of displaced persons from Rakhine State in accordance with the bilateral instruments and is always ready to receive verified displaced persons. The government is fully committed to the repatriation process. The process has not yet been able to commence due to the current security conditions of the Rakhine State.

Myanmar underscores that unilateral pressure does not contribute to constructive cooperation between Myanmar and the United Nations. Mutual understanding, respect, and reciprocal engagement will result in pragmatic and positive collaboration.
