The New Zealand government has invited Myanmar government officials to attend the ASEAN-New Zealand summit to be held in Wellington this month. New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed that it has invited senior Myanmar officials have been invited to the summit between New Zealand and Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries, taking place in Wellington in April. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luzon said that it was an invitation to the ASEAN group and would be a “mid-level” official, not a senior Myanmar leader”.
A spokesman for New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said that Myanmar has been invited to participate in the meeting between New Zealand and ASEAN, which will be the first meeting in New Zealand since 2019.
Each ASEAN member country must decide exactly who to send to the meeting. It is reported that after the power disputes in Myanmar in 2021, New Zealand criticized the SAC government and imposed sanctions. New Zealand-based news reported that Myanmar activists in New Zealand, as well as the NZCTU, have criticized the invitation of Myanmar government officials to attend the ASEAN-New Zealand summit held in New Zealand.
