The first genetically modified pig kidney has been successfully transplanted into a living patient by US surgeons, the hospital announced Thursday and this procedure might help in the absence of organs donor.

The transplant operation took four hours and was carried out on a 62-year-old man suffering from end-stage kidney disease on Saturday, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) announced on Thursday. The hospital said the patient is recovering well at MGH and is expected to be discharged soon. MGH said the procedure marks a major milestone in the effort to provide patients with more readily available organs.
