A delegation led by Ms. Ma Theresa P. Lazaro, Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines and Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair to Myanmar, paid a courtesy call to the Acting President of Myanmar, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, at the National Defense and Security Council Office in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
During the meeting, discussions focused on Myanmar’s ongoing efforts to improve cooperation within the ASEAN framework. Participants also addressed the current state of friendly diplomatic relations between Myanmar and the Republic of the Philippines. Additionally, the conversation touched on the circumstances that led Myanmar to assume responsibility for the widespread electoral fraud that occurred during the 2020 general election, as well as the subsequent attempt to unlawfully seize power.
Furthermore, they talked about the political developments in Myanmar, preparations for free and fair elections, the accuracy of voter lists, and the successful completion of the first phase of the election scheduled for December 28, 2025. They also reviewed the conditions necessary for continuing the subsequent election phases (2) and (3) in the remaining townships.
During the first phase of the elections, international election observation teams, including those from the Philippines, participated and provided positive feedback on the process. They discussed how the elections in Myanmar ensured that all citizens maintained their democratic rights.
Additionally, they explored ways to enhance cooperation between Myanmar and the Philippines in the political, economic, and trade sectors. The discussions also included how Myanmar could further strengthen its cooperation within ASEAN to the best of its ability.
