Thailand plans to send election observers to Myanmar for its general election scheduled on December 28, according to the country’s foreign minister.
Myanmar government has announced that elections will be held on December 28 as part of a transition to civilian rule.
Siha stated, “It may not be a perfect election under the current circumstances, but it can serve as a starting point for meaningful progress.” He expressed hopes that the election would contribute to a peace process in the country.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has decided not to send observers to the election. Nevertheless, Siha emphasized that his country would continue to engage with Myanmar. He also addressed the ongoing armed conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, noting that a peace agreement was reached in October, but hostilities resumed earlier this month.
Siha accused Cambodia of violating the agreement and mentioned that while Thailand is open to discussing a ceasefire, “we believe that Cambodia must first request a ceasefire.”
In response, Cambodia has accused Thailand of violating the peace agreement.
