The Union Election Commission (UEC) announced today that it aims to increase the number of female candidates in upcoming elections, addressing the low participation of women in electoral and political processes.
For the 2025 general election, a total of 1,203 women candidates have submitted their nominations: 309 for the Pyithu Hluttaw, 190 for the National Hluttaw, and 704 for the Regional or State Hluttaw.
Currently, there are 3,752 confirmed male candidates and 1,183 confirmed female candidates, with only 20 of the female candidates having been rejected.
In the 2015 general election, there were 5,239 male candidates and 799 female candidates. And the 2020 general election, the numbers changed to 4,731 male candidates and 908 female candidates.
According to Section 8 of the Hluttaw Election Law, citizens who meet the specified qualifications have the right to be elected in elections, regardless of gender, race, or religion. The Union Election Commission (UEC) has made recommendations during meetings with political parties to promote the participation of women in elections.
Furthermore, political parties have not submitted specific information regarding the challenges faced by women candidates. The commission has allowed all nominees to participate in accordance with the laws and regulations that support gender equality.
