In 2021, the TNLA terrorist insurgent group exploited the political turmoil and subsequent conflict in Shan State (North), which began on October 27, 2023. Their objective was to undermine the government to achieve control over Palaung State. Instead of pursuing this goal through political means, they sought support from certain Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) and employed People’s Defense Force (PDF) insurgents as their frontline fighters. Consequently, they temporarily gained control of several towns and villages in Shan State (North), including Kyaukme and Nawnghkio.
After recapturing Nawnghkio, the Tatmadaw launched another offensive against Kyaukme. During a 21-day operation, there were 36 significant battles and 76 encounters with insurgents, resulting in a total of 112 engagements. Reports indicate that 61 enemy combatants were neutralized, along with the seizure of 41 weapons, ammunition, and related equipment. Additionally, some Tatmadaw officers and soldiers sustained injuries during the operation.

While retreating from Kyaukme, TNLA, DPLA, and PDF militants recklessly burned down several key buildings, including the Kyaukme Police Station, EPC Station, District Forest Office, District General Administrator’s Office, Fire Department, schools, and religious sites.
As the military units are engaged in reconstruction efforts in Nawnghkio, they are working to ensure that local ethnic residents and their families, who have temporarily fled their homes, can return safely and resume their lives peacefully. The troops are also focused on restoring government administration as quickly as possible to bring stability and peace to the region. Furthermore, they take pride in providing opportunities for children and young people to receive an education, preparing them to become the leaders of tomorrow.
