The Union Election Commission (UEC) announced today that elections will take place in a total of 712 constituencies for the 2025 multi-party democratic general election. This includes elections for the Pyithu Hluttaw, the Amyotha Hluttaw, and the State and Regional Hluttaw.
The breakdown of the 712 constituencies is as follows: 274 for the Pyithu Hluttaw, 75 for First-past-the-post (FPTP), 26 for Proportional Representation (PR), 266 for the Region Hluttaw or State Hluttaw, 42 for Region Hluttaw or State Hluttaw Proportional Representation (PR), and 29 for Region Hluttaw or State Hluttaw ethnic constituencies.
It has been announced that elections will not take place in 121 constituencies due to unfavorable conditions for holding free and fair elections. This includes 56 Pyithu Hluttaw constituencies, 9 Amyotha Hluttaw First-past-the-post (FPTP) constituencies, and 56 Region or State Hluttaw First-past-the-post (FPTP) constituencies.
The 56 Pyithu Hluttaw constituencies where elections cannot be held are distributed as follows: 4 in Kachin State, 3 in Kayah State, 10 in Sagaing Division, 5 in Magway Division, 3 in Mandalay Division, 10 in Rakhine State, and 17 in Shan State.
The 9 Amyotha Hluttaw First-past-the-post (FPTP) constituencies where elections will not be held are: 2 in Kayah State, 3 in Chin State, 2 in Rakhine State, and 2 in Shan State.
The 56 Region or State Hluttaw First-past-the-post (FPTP) constituencies where elections will not be held are: 4 in Kachin State, 3 in Kayah State, 4 in Chin State, 10 in Sagaing Division, 5 in Magway Division, 3 in Mandalay Division, 10 in Rakhine State, and 17 in Shan State.
