The armed UWSA executes murder, robbery, and rape in public if committed by others. Still, its subordinate Hopan district commander does not give the death penalty or long-term imprisonment for aggravated rape, including rape of a minor, but only fines and ten years in prison.
According to a report yesterday by the ‘Wa’ Youth Voice, which reports “Wa” news from the UWSA’s control, the UWSA executed the Child Sexual Abuse, Ta Nyi Lin, and his associates, on August 16 at the Cultural Centre in Hopan.
The verdict stated that the perpetrator, Hopan District Chief Ta Nyi Lin, raped four young women, including a minor, and ordered the two rapists to pay 100,000 yuan in compensation, while the two women who were not raped were ordered to pay 50,000 yuan in compensation, for a total of 300,000 yuan in compensation and 10 years in prison. In addition, the Hopan District Chief, Deputy Chief and Cultural Association Leader, who were complicit in the same crime as the perpetrator, were also demoted from their current positions and given three months’ leave.
According to MT News, since October 2024, the UWSA has sentenced at least 13 people, including a Chinese national, to death and life imprisonment for rape, murder, and robbery. However, the lenient sentence for the rape of the accomplices of UWSA’s close associate, Hopang District Chief Tha Nyi Lin, has been criticized on social media. Under the Wa News Land news, the account owner Thein Zaw Aung wrote, “They stole and were sentenced to death. They sentenced for Child Sexual Abuse and other girls with money and 10 years in prison. It’s just one eye/one ear. If it was someone else, it would have been obvious that they would have been sentenced to death.” The account owner Mg Mg Kyaw also commented, “Child Sexual Abuse Accused Tha Nyi Lin is the nephew of “Wa” leader Pauk U Chan.”
