A landslide occurred at a former mining site in Hpakan Township, Kachin State, around 9 a.m. on July 21, resulting in multiple casualties among individuals searching for unwashed stones. This information was reported by the Hpakan-based Social Assistance Association.
The site of the landslide is locally referred to as the Tin Aung Kyaing Company’s former location and is situated in Thayar Kone Village, Hpakan Township. At the time of the incident, approximately 20 people were present, and the names of 17 individuals have been identified.
“It rained continuously for the past few days, but it has now reduced to a light sprinkle. The heavy rainfall has caused the soil to weaken. The piles of earth collapsed from a height of about 200 feet, making it difficult to access the victims. We have managed to dig out two individuals, but the rest are challenging to retrieve,” an official from the Hmaw Si Sa – Seik Mu Social Assistance Association stated to MT News.
Landslides linked to jade mining in Hpakant, Kachin State, are common occurrences. The most significant incident took place in November 2015, when a landfill near Lone Khin village collapsed, killing 116 people and leaving over 100 others missing.
