The BBC and Myilatt Radio, both of which support the NUG and PDF, have reported that four PDF groups operating in Wetlet have been involved in murder and robbery.
The reports by Myaylat News Agency and the BBC are similar, but Myaylat News Agency offers more detailed information. According to Myaylat News Agency, on July 13 at around midnight, 11 PDF members, including individuals from the PaKaPha group, robbed a house belonging to a family of six in Hla Taw Village, Wetlet Township, Sagaing Region. During the incident, they fatally stabbed the head of the household, a man in his 30s, on his way to the hospital. The participating PDF members disclosed that their group included not only the Pakaphs from Hla Taw Village but also 11 members of various revolutionary forces: 2 from the Meikhtila Drone Battalion, 2 from the Aryataw PDF, 2 from the PaKaPha of Wetlet Township, 2 from the PPaKaPha of Thakwataw Village, as well as 2 female members. They also mentioned that the PDFs had consumed alcohol at a restaurant before committing the robbery and murder, after which they robbed between fourty million and sixty million kyats.
The BBC reported that two of the PDFs involved in the robbery were arrested on the night of July 13 by the Wetlet-based Public Security Bureau (PSB). By July 14, it was reported that all 11 participants had been apprehended.
Wetlet Township is an area where the National Unity Government’s (NUG) three Pa are frequently involved in serious crimes such as murder, robbery, and rape. In May 2024, Maung Naing, the leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Hmaw Oo Village, ordered the People’s Defense Force (PDF) to protect the wife of a PDF member who was three months pregnant. Unfortunately, she was raped, resulting in a miscarriage. According to reports from NUG-supporting media, Maung Naing was sentenced to five years in prison in December.
On February 26, 2024, a 22-year-old woman named Ma Yu Mon Htike from Thakwattaw Village in Wetlet Township was shot dead in front of her parents. The shooter, Nga Pyae (B), the Deputy Company Commander of Shwebo District Battalion (2), Company (1), claimed that he acted out of jealousy because Ma Yu Mon Htike did not like him and was involved with another woman. Such incidents continue to occur in the area.
