The Directorate of Hotels and Tourism (Sagaing Region) has been prepping to revive tourism in the Sagaing Tourism Zone, where tourists and homegrown visitors used to be crowded.
There are six tourism zones in Sagaing Region: Sagaing, Monywa, Shwebo, Katha, Kalay and the Naga Self-Administered Zone. Local pilgrims mainly flock to Sagaing and Monywa zones, and reconstruction activities are underway following the Mandalay Earthquake. Transportation has been restored there. Souvenir shops are now back in business. Zalon Hill and the reclining figure called the Alaungdaw Kathapa. Usually, those places are crowded with pilgrims during the high season. Earthquake-related knowledge can also be observed there.
“Hotels and guesthouses are endeavouring to be operational again. The tourism sector in the region will be revived one or two months later,” an official of the Directorate of Hotels and Tourism considered.
Four out of 14 hotels and guesthouses that suffered less damage from the Mandalay Earthquake have been reported to the regional government to restart their business operations. Four hotels collapsed, and six were adversely affected. They are seeking approval for reconstruction services from the Ministry of Construction, as per the SOP and the Engineers’ building assessment and compliance.
Last year, Sagaing Region hosted over 320,000 visitors and over 2,500 tourists, according to the Directorate of Hotels and Tourism (Sagaing Region).
