Grade 12 students retaking the 2024-2025 university entrance exam begin their exams today, June 16. According to the Ministry of Education, 98.67 percent of students are participating, with just over 1 percent failing.
The schedule for the Matriculation Examinations for Kachin, Sagaing, and Mandalay—regions affected by the Mandalay earthquake—plans to have these exams retaken within 21 days from today. Only students who previously took the multi-language exams are eligible for retakes.
Today, the Myanmar language subject exam will be retaken at designated examination centers in the respective regions and states. Of the 63,673 students participating in the retakes, 62,824 took the Myanmar language exam on the first day. The Ministry of Education reported that 849 students did not pass, resulting in a passing rate of 98.67 percent and a failing rate of 1.33 percent.
To ensure that students can take the exam peacefully, security arrangements have been systematically organized, including the involvement of township officials, health workers, fire and security personnel, and traffic police.
Despite damage to some answer sheets due to the Mandalay earthquake, there have been calls to proceed without retaking the exam. However, State Administrative Council (SAC) Chairman Senior General Min Aung Hlaing stated during the Cabinet Coordination Meeting on May 19 that the decision has been made to retake the exams in a dignified manner and in accordance with international standards.
