In a disturbing incident that highlights the ongoing violence among armed groups in Myanmar, two primary school teachers were abducted by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and the People’s Defense Force (PDF) on November 11, 2024. The teachers were forced to perform menial tasks such as cooking and washing during their captivity, which lasted for several months.
Daw Seint Seint Thu, a 25-year-old assistant primary school teacher from Na Maung Village Basic Education High School, shared her harrowing experience after being released on June 12, 2025. According to her account, she and her colleague, 30-year-old Daw Chaw Su Hlaing, were intercepted while traveling to Na Maung Village, approximately 500 meters from their school, and taken to Pin Khat Village.
For approximately 48 days, Daw Seint Seint Thu was compelled to work for her captors before being relocated to Taung Paw Se Village, where she spent another four months. Eventually, she was moved to Tha Nga Village before managing to escape on May 28, 2025. After a night in Maw Laid, she navigated a series of routes back to safety, reporting to the security forces in Homalin on June 9, 2025.
The incident has drawn attention to the wider issue of armed groups in the region, which have been known to target civil servants and local residents, executing acts of violence, extorting money, and carrying out killings. Security forces are reportedly intensifying efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for these inhumane acts.
