A 68-year-old retired ambassador and former Major General, Cho Htun Aung, was shot dead around 9 a.m. on May 22 on Shwe Hnin Si (6) Street, Ward No. (5), in Mayangone Township, Yangon Region.
According to a police source who spoke to MT News, “The retired ambassador was picking mangoes to distribute when he was shot at close range by two masked men on bicycles, who then fled the scene. He died on the road due to his severe injuries. His body is currently at the hospital.”
At the scene of the incident, authorities found six bullet shells, two live bullets, one bullet head, and a sharp knife, all of which were seized for investigation.
The confession also revealed that retired General Cho Htun Aung had been targeted by the Golden Valley Warriors. He was a student of Internal Security and Counter-Terrorism and International Relations at the National Defence College (NDC).
The NDC is a significant military academy for the Tatmadaw, where individuals from the rank of Colonel can commence their studies. The Golden Valley Warriors have been active in collecting and verifying intelligence for an extended period.
Cho Htun Aung, who hailed from Tay Za-5, retired with the rank of Brigadier General but continued to teach military courses for the Tatmadaw. He was regarded as a military target due to his ongoing work.
Previously, Cho Htun Aung served as the ambassador to Cambodia, and since returning to Myanmar, he had been teaching senior Tatmadaw officers at the National Defence College in Nay Pyi Taw. The Golden Valley Warriors identified Major General (ret.) Cho Htun Aung as one of the divisional leaders instrumental in developing militia strategies with the assistance of seasoned groups.
