On January 7, 2024, after the TNLA seized Kutkai town and formed armed security groups, there has been an increase in looting, killings, and armed robberies. Recently, armed men opened fire on a mother and son who were returning from the market in Mong Yap village. During this incident, approximately 40 million kyat was stolen while the pair was being checked.
On May 15, at 4 p.m., Daw Am and her son U Ai Ying were driving back to Kutkai after selling food in Taknai village. As they arrived in Mong Yat village, three armed men threatened them and opened fire on their car.
Following the shooting, the mother and son stopped their vehicle, and the armed men, who were affiliated with the TNLA, questioned them. The robbers stole about 40 million kyat in cash and four mobile phones.
Although the Palaung State Liberation Front/Ta’ang National Liberation Army (PSLF/TNLA) claimed that the Ta’ang State Police are investigating the robbery, commentators have criticized the TNLA, as they are the only group permitted to carry weapons in the area. Many suspect that the robbers are either TNLA members or affiliated individuals.
