According to the Director of the National Museum (Yangon) Daw Nan Laung Ngi, The Hon Lim Chin Tsong’s OBE palace in Bahan Township, Yangon Region, has been renovated and maintained since the 2022-2023 financial year to transform it into a national art museum that preserves, collects, and exhibits works of art from all over Myanmar, thereby promoting a greater understanding of the value of art.
It is planned to open 11 galleries on the first floor and eight galleries on the second floor. There will be coffee shops, libraries, painting studios, meeting rooms, offices, and souvenir shops on the remaining floors.
The Hon Lim Chin Tsong’s OBE palace is a five-story building—two for the main structure and another three in the intricate dome that sits atop—named for a Chinese immigrant, businessman, and member of the Order of the British Empire, Lim Chin Tsong. Construction began in 1915 and finished four years later, reportedly at a cost of 2.2 million rupees.
