THE ASEAN Emergency Response and Assessment Team (ASEAN-ERAT) conducted a field survey in Mocha-affected areas: Sittway, Rathedaung, Kyauktaw, and Ponnagyun townships in Rakhine State from 22 to 25 May.
A meeting to present the findings and procedures of the survey to the Union Minister of Social Welfare, Relief, and Resettlement took place at the meeting hall of the Disaster Management Department yesterday morning.
At first, leaders from two survey teams clarified the findings and the tasks that should be prioritized based on the results of the survey in relations to food, shelter, water and cleaning up, drinking water, livelihoods, and employment.
Union Minister of Social Welfare, Relief, and Resettlement Dr Thet Thet Khine thanked the efforts of the ASEAN-ERAT team and said that field surveys were compact and complete. The Union minister also stated that the health, education, electricity supply, and communication sectors are being prioritized by the government, and plans are underway to repair damaged lakes to provide clean drinking water, distribute seedlings and hatchlings from the respective departments for the livelihood sector, and carry out the cash for work programme. Currently, Tatmadaw members, MPF members, firefighters and volunteers are cleaning the public areas; the re-opening of markets and stability of commodity prices are also being done; and the water distribution with the use of water purifier trucks is being carried out.
The emergency response to Cyclone Mocha and the conditions of the rehabilitation process were also discussed.
