The pro-military United Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) “won most of the seats” in the first round of Myanmar’s military-run elections, according to a party source who spoke to AFP on December 29.
The military took control State power due to electoral corruption in 2021 but has vowed to restore it to the people. The phased elections will begin on December 28 and last for a month.
“According to various reports, the United Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) is winning the majority of seats nationwide,” said a party official in Nay Pyi Taw, who requested anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the media.
The December 28 election, which took place in 102 of the country’s 330 townships, was the largest of the three rounds of voting.
The first round of voting was conducted safely, with high security measures in place to prevent any attacks, and voter turnout exceeded expectations.
