The counting of advance votes for the 2025 multi-party democratic general election started at 4 p.m. on December 26.
The advance vote counting is taking place at Botahtaung School (6) in Botahtaung Township, located in the Yangon Region.
Botahtaung Township is one of the areas participating in the first phase of the election, which will also include 11 other townships across the Yangon Region, for a total of 12 townships.
In Botahtaung Township, there are 12 wards and a total of 29 polling stations. According to an official from the Botahtaung Township Election Commission, the third round of voter registration recorded 32,866 eligible voters.
The Election Law and Regulations provide guidelines for advance voting, both outside and within the constituency.
For advance voting outside of the constituency, the following groups are eligible to vote early using advance voting certificates, following the specified methods:
- Household members of military personnel,
- Students studying outside the constituency,
- Trainees located outside the constituency,
- Other voters residing outside the constituency,
- Detainees,
- Hospital inpatients,
- Individuals outside the country with government permission.
These provisions ensure that a variety of groups can participate in the electoral process, even if they are away from their designated voting areas.
For advance voting within the constituency, the local ward or village tract election commission will facilitate advance ballot voting for the following eight categories of voters who are present in the constituency but cannot personally visit the polling station:
- Individuals suffering from leprosy
- Individuals with serious illnesses
- Elderly individuals
- New mothers who have recently given birth
- Individuals detained in a police station or prison
- Individuals receiving inpatient treatment in a hospital
- Civil servants, military personnel, or police officers temporarily assigned outside their registered voting area
- Voters who need to travel a significant distance beyond their registered constituency on election day.
