According to the Taninthayi Region Fisheries Federation, Myanmar exports Panamei saltwater prawns annually, with 5,946.187 tonnes exported by the December 2024–2025 financial year.
Currently, prawns are exported to China in boiled form and to Japan in frozen form. To increase export capacity, breeders aim to focus more on farming rather than relying solely on marine capture.
In addition, Myanmar imports prawn larvae and feed annually from Thailand, so producers are establishing domestic hatcheries with the government’s support. As a result of this effort, long-term benefits are expected for both the country and local producers.
In the Taninthayi Region, Panamei white prawns are farmed on 2,217.56 acres using the Good Aquaculture Practices (GAqP) system in Dawei, Kyunsu, Palaw and Kawthoung townships. Expansion is also underway, with an additional 2,662.68 acres in Thayetchaung Township of Dawei District, Myeik, Palaw and Kyunsu townships of Myeik District, Bokpyin Township of Bokpyin District, and Kawthoung Township of Kawthoung District. Furthermore, Kyunsu Township alone has seen an additional 390.12 acres allocated for prawn farming.
