Myanmar shipped 1.1 million tonnes of corn to abroad through maritime route from 1 April 2022 to 10 March 2023, U Tun Lwin, chairman of Myanmar Pulses, Beans, Maize and Sesame Seeds Merchants Association (MPBSMA), said.

“Myanmar merchants can freely export the corn without signing MOU. We are exporting the pulses, maize and sesame to 70 countries, he said.”

Myanmar annually produces between 2.3 million tonnes of corn and 2.6 million tonnes of corn per year and is exporting them to Thailand via border trade route under the tax exemption from 1 March to 31 August.

Currently, Myanmar corn still has demand due to the requirement of regional countries. The price depends on demand and supply and some traders who are exporting corn through some border trade gates face difficulties due to 65-35 system, according to the traders.
