Malaysian Foreign Minister Dato’ Sri Mohamad Hassan held extensive discussions with his counterpart from Myanmar, U Tin Maung Swe, during a one-day working visit to Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday, May 19.
According to the Myanmar Foreign Ministry’s Facebook page, “The two foreign ministers had a cordial and frank discussion about the development of bilateral relations between Myanmar and Malaysia, as well as cooperation in ASEAN-related matters. They also exchanged views on enhancing existing cooperation in areas of mutual interest.”
Observers note that the renewed relationship between Malaysia and Myanmar signifies a political shift that could transform regional diplomacy in Southeast Asia. This could facilitate Myanmar’s return to ASEAN, a move that comes at a time when the country has been facing long-standing political instability, internal armed conflicts, and international scrutiny.
Kavi Chongkittavorn, a Bangkok-based geopolitical analyst, commented, “ASEAN needs to bridge the gap as there were differing views on Myanmar after the election in Cebu. Mohamed’s visit shows that Malaysia has recognized the election results, which is a positive development. Some other countries have not recognized them. Now is the time to re-engage with Myanmar.”
