The National Defense and Security Council announced last night that a total of 8,665 individuals who were convicted and sentenced under Section 505-A of the Penal Code, as well as those charged under Section 505-A of the Penal Code and Section 512 of the Criminal Procedure Code who are still on trial, have been granted amnesty and that their cases have been closed.
The National Defense and Security Council reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the multi-party democratic system desired by the people and stated that it will continue working in cooperation with the public.

As part of the ongoing measures, and in accordance with National Defense and Security Council Order No. (10/2025), 724 prisoners convicted under Section 505-A of the Penal Code have been granted amnesty. This decision aims to ensure that all eligible voters retain their right to vote in the upcoming multi-party democratic general election, allowing them to participate freely and fairly. These prisoners are currently serving sentences in various prisons and detention centers. The amnesty is granted under Section 401, Sub-section (1) of the Penal Code, with the condition that if they commit another crime, they will be required to serve any remaining sentence in addition to the new sentence.
Similarly, under National Defense and Security Council Order No. (11/2025), an additional 2,361 prisoners, also convicted under Section 505-A of the Penal Code, have been granted amnesty. This measure continues to support eligible voters’ rights ahead of the general election and ensures that they can vote freely and fairly.
Furthermore, under Order No. (12/2025) issued in accordance with Article 427 of the Constitution, the National Defense and Security Council has closed the pending cases of 5,580 individuals charged under Section 505-A of the Penal Code and Section 512 of the Criminal Procedure Code for evading prosecution. This decision is intended to guarantee that all eligible voters are able to cast their votes freely and fairly in the upcoming general election.
