A delegation from Myanmar, led by Union Minister for Energy U Ko Ko Lwin, is currently in the People’s Republic of China to participate in the 2025 International Energy Transition Forum and to discuss energy cooperation between Myanmar and China. Yesterday morning, they met with a delegation headed by the Chairman of the China National Oil & Gas Exploration and Development Corporation (CNODC) in Beijing.
During the meeting, the Union Minister explored the possibility of collaborating on the exploration, drilling, and production of oil and natural gas in Myanmar’s promising offshore blocks. Topics discussed included the organization of training courses in management, economics, and the legal aspects of offshore projects, as well as establishing working groups to enhance interaction between both parties. The Minister also emphasized the need for assistance in developing human resources for Myanmar’s energy sector.
Following this meeting, they engaged with a team led by the presidents of Canadian Foresight Group (CFG) and China Oilfield Services Limited (COSL) to discuss the immediate start of exploration activities in an offshore block that both parties believe holds great potential.
On October 21, the Union Minister met with a delegation led by the Vice Chairman of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) in Beijing.
During the meeting, both parties discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in the oil and gas sector. They focused on investing in promising oil and gas projects, transporting produced natural gas through the existing Southeast Asian natural gas pipeline, exploring new offshore blocks, and collaborating on exploration, drilling, and production. They also talked about fully utilizing the capacity of Southeast Asian oil and gas pipelines, creating opportunities for companies interested in replacing and upgrading onshore pipelines to meet established standards, and ensuring the continuous supply of crude oil and natural gas needed for new refinery expansion projects. The discussion was cordial and frank, highlighting pipeline security and efforts to maintain peace and stability in areas along the pipeline.
Following the meeting, the Myanmar delegation had a working lunch with the team led by the chairman of Sino-pipeline International (SPI), the company responsible for the Sampurakan refinery project.
During the trip, the Myanmar delegation visited BGP, a geophysical exploration and oil exploration equipment manufacturer owned by the People’s Republic of China. They observed practical measurement operations that utilized 3D seismic and oil and gas exploration technologies, as well as the production of seismic measurement equipment.
