Chairman of State Administration Council Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said he was striving to hold a free and fair multi-party democracy general election, which, however, depends on State\u2019s stability and tranquility in Myanmar.
The Senior General made the comment during an exclusive interview by Ms. Kukushkina Tatiana, special reporter of the RIA, Rossiya Segodnya News Agency, at Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) in Russian Federation on 6 September.
\u201cWhether it is conducive to hold elections depends greatly on peace, a strong economy and political stability. As we promised, we are exerting efforts to hold a free and fair election, in which the public can cast their votes independently without any outside interference,\u201d the Senior General said.
\u201cThe election must be free and fair and votes are cast without any outside interference. Public right to freedom to vote is important. Only then, will they be able to express their will. We are striving to achieve this objective,\u201d he added.
\u201cMyanmar held its first, second and third elections in 2010, 2015 and 2020 respectively. Of 330 townships in the entire country, elections were held in 325 townships in 2010, in 323 townships in 2015, and 315 townships in 2020,\u201d the Senior General continued.
Elections are key to democracy. Only after elections, can the administrative body and other union level organizations be formed with elected representatives and duties are assigned. It is important that the public can enjoy all these rights,\u201d he said.
\u201cMoreover, the decrease in the number of townships where elections can be held amounts to losses of democratic rights of the people,\u201d he pointed out.
My aim is to hold elections throughout the country without leaving any gaps. You recently asked a question on peace, which is relevant to elections. So, I am trying to achieve peace first to enable the people in respective areas to participate in the elections.
